Hello All

I have to start this news letter by saying a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone
who attended our Open Day on Sunday, came to shop early and passed on
their best wishes, or have come in since and asked how the day went - we
are
very appreciative and amazed at the number of people who supported the
event - THANK YOU!

The village of Harvington, friends and family really did pull together to
help make the day a success, and I cannot thank people enough.  Alison,
the photographer
has taken a number of photographs of the day, and these will appear on the
website very soon........


ELLENDEN COLD COOKED BEEF
Thank you for all your kind comments after the tasting on Sunday - we will
be selling this cooked & packed  this weekend.  The cuts are both Top side
and Silver side.

The butchers are now cutting us some frying steak.  This is bascially thin
slices of top side that have been tenderized.  David has both fried and
barbecued this cut with great success!  We have also had positive feedback
from customers who have tried and tested. 

It is also a cheaper alternative to Fillet, Sirloin and Rump steak.

If you are planning on having a barbecue and watching the England game

ELLENDEN HOME BRED SPRING LAMB - Many thanks again for all your kind
emails and comments in the shop after the "tasting" on Sunday.  The lamb
sampled was a leg on the bone, that had been frozen.  The Relish was Mrs
Gledhill's Bramble Mint Jelly made with our Bramley Apples!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK  - CITRUS SPICED SKEWERS
We were giving out these recipe cards at the Open Day, kindly sent to us
by EBLEX

Serves: 4

Preparation time: 10 minutes plus marinating time

Cooking time:  Rare: 3-4 minutes on each side
               Medium: 4 - 5 minutes on each side
               Well Done: 6-7 minutes on each side

INGREDIENTS
450g / 1lb ELlenden beef sirloin, rump or Topside steaks cubed (depends on
how much you want to pay)!
15ml / 1tbsp Ground Paprika
Grated Zest of 1 lemon
5ml / 1 tsp dried Oregano
2.5ml / 1/2 tsp Ground Cumin
60ml / 4tbsp Greek Yogurt
Grated zest and juice of 1/2 lemon
Small handful freshly chopped mint
100g bag Watercress
1 Fennel bulb, finely sliced
1 small cucumber, chopped
15-30ml / 1-2 tbsp Olive Oil
Juice of 1 fresh Lime
Salt & freshly milled black pepper.

METHOD
1. Thread the steaks onto 4 short metal or wooden skewers.  In a small
bowl mix together the Paprika, Lemon, Oregano and Cumin with the Olive Oil
and brush over the skewers.  If time allows, marinate in the refrigerator
for 20 minutes

2. For the yogurt dressing, mix together the yogurt, lemon juice and the
mint.  Season.

3. For the salad mix together the watercress, Fennel, cucumber, and toss
with the olive oil and lime.  Season and chill until required.

4. Grill on a rack or barbecue according to preference under a moderate
heat.

5. Serve the skewers with salad, yogurt dressing and potatoe wedges



FARMING NEWS - NATURE TRAIL
We have decided to keep the Nature Trail Open for the summer.  This is a
lovely walk around the orchards, field and lake.  If anyone would like to
bring the family please come to the shop and collect a qustion sheet and
map. There is no cost involved.  All completed sheets will be entered in a
free prize draw to adopt one of our free range hens.  The Draw will take
place at the end of the summer holidays.

SPROUT PLANTING
David, Grandad, Matthew, Emily and Toby have just spent a lovely summer
evening planting Sprouts - as I put the shop away there was a lovely scene
of David driving the tractor with Emily, Toby, Grandad and Matthew sat on a
"planter" hitched to the back of the tractor - one of those moments where
you wishes you had a camera handy...

Let's hope for a better National performance this weekend!
